Author Guidelines

Important

All manuscripts submitted to the Revista de Segurança, Desenvolvimento e Defesa undergo verification using similarity-detection software as part of the editorial process. The purpose is to ensure the originality and scientific integrity of the published works.

Manuscripts with a similarity index equal to or lower than 20% — excluding quotations, bibliographic references, and standardized technical expressions — are considered acceptable.

Manuscripts with a similarity index between 21% and 30% may be returned to the authors for adjustments before the evaluation process continues.

Manuscripts exceeding 30% similarity will be automatically rejected, regardless of other academic merits.

Submission of the manuscript implies the authors’ agreement with this verification.

Manuscript Preparation

When submitting the manuscript, any information that allows the identification of the authors in the text and in the properties of the Word (.docx) file must be removed.

Types of Publication

The Revista de Segurança, Desenvolvimento e Defesa accepts scientific articles and policy papers according to the following specifications:

a) For scientific articles, only contributions involving at least one author holding a doctoral degree will be accepted. Authors with lower academic qualifications may only publish works in coauthorship with a researcher holding a doctoral degree.

b) For policy papers, only contributions whose authors hold a master’s degree will be accepted.

I) Specifications for Scientific Articles

a) Text formatting

The body of the manuscript must be typed in Word (.docx), with 1.5 line spacing, using Times New Roman, size 12, with no page numbering.

Footnotes, long quotations, abstracts, and summaries must be typed with single line spacing.

The manuscript must contain between 5,000 and 8,000 words in total, including references.

Authors are advised to observe the ABNT standards:

NBR 14724/2011 — Formatting of scientific papers, monographs, and undergraduate final papers. In the case of charts, figures, tables, photographs, and other illustrations, the Tabular Presentation Standards of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) must be observed;

NBR 6023/2018 — Preparation of references; and

NBR 10520/2023 — Presentation of citations in documents.

Articles and essays submitted to the journal are requested to contain at least the following sections:

1. introduction;

2. methodology, which does not necessarily need to be a specific section and may be presented in another section, such as the introduction and/or the abstract;

3. development;

4. concluding remarks; and

5. bibliographic references.

Authors retain copyright and grant the journal the right of first publication, with the work licensed under the CC BY license.

The manuscript must not include author identification in any part of the document, including the document properties, data sources, tables, maps, or easily identifiable bibliographic references.

Tables, charts, figures, maps, and frames must be presented in the text, in the approximate location where they should appear in the final publication, with consecutive and independent numbering in Arabic numerals, each identified at the top followed by its order number, for example: Table 1, Frame 1, Chart 2, or Figure 1. Tables and frames should preferably be presented as objects rather than as figures in the text.

Articles must be accompanied by 3 to 5 keywords, in accordance with ABNT standards, and by an abstract of 150 to 200 words in the language in which the submission is written, as well as in English.

Articles may be signed by up to three authors. At least one of the authors must hold a doctoral degree. In coauthored articles, the order of authorship shall have academic qualification as the first criterion and alphabetical order of names as the second criterion.

The manuscript may not contain the identification of any of the authors, including identification in the document properties. It must include the title, abstract, text, and bibliographic references, as well as all graphic elements within the body of the text. Additionally, graphic elements, tables, maps, frames, and figures must be submitted as supplementary files, according to the instructions below.

IMPORTANT: All tables, charts, figures, and frames must also be submitted in JPG format as supplementary files, with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi. Tables and frames must also be submitted as image files. Charts, tables, maps, and figures may be in color.

b) Explanatory notes

The insertion of footnotes is not permitted. If the information is important, it should be incorporated into the text, in accordance with ABNT NBR 10520.

c) Supplementary elements

Authorship information must be entered directly into the system, in the metadata tab.

II) Specifications for Policy Papers

Policy papers must contain between 3,000 and 4,000 words.

a) Structure

Each policy paper must follow the structure below:

1. Executive Summary: presentation and relevance of the topic; central aspects; objective and structure of the text;

2. Keywords: 3 to 5;

3. Problem Analysis: implications of the topic for Defense;

4. Recommendations: in bullet points;

5. References: according to ABNT standards.

The journal encourages the production of empirical research to support the problem analysis and the proposed recommendations.

Focus on Argumentation: Authors should focus on arguments, not intentions. The journal is a platform for open and respectful debate based on ideas and evidence.

Texts must be submitted exclusively through the OJS platform and must be prepared according to the Policy Paper template.

Authors and coauthors are requested to include, upon submission of the manuscript, a short bio of up to three lines. This will assist the editorial production process if the article is accepted. This information may be entered in the same window where personal data are included, such as name, email, institution, and other details.

Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence Tools

The RSDD allows the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence tools to support writing, language review, translation, information organization, programming, and other auxiliary tasks related to manuscript preparation, provided that such use observes the principles of scientific integrity, transparency, human responsibility, and preservation of intellectual authorship.

The use of these tools does not replace the authors’ responsibility for the conception, development, analysis, interpretation, validation, and presentation of the scientific content. Authors remain fully responsible for the originality, accuracy, reliability of information, correctness of references, and conclusions presented in the manuscript.

The use of Generative Artificial Intelligence tools is not permitted to fabricate data, references, results, images, or nonexistent information, nor to replace the authors’ intellectual contribution in the formulation of arguments, analyses, and scientific conclusions. These tools may also not be listed as authors or coauthors of the manuscript.

Whenever Generative Artificial Intelligence tools are used at any stage of the preparation of the work, authors must clearly and transparently declare such use in the manuscript itself, as provided for in the RSDD Policy on the Use of AI. An example of the declaration of use is included in the submission templates.
